Research

When he is the one who follows

My independent research looks at male accompanying spouses — men who relocate for a partner's career — and at how the move reshapes identity, work and family roles.

Why it matters

A story that is rarely told

Most of what is written about accompanying partners assumes the person who follows is a woman. Men in that role are less visible, and their experience is less understood — by employers, by relocation services and sometimes by the men themselves.

The research focuses on the lived experience behind the move: what happens to a sense of self when the career, the routines and the roles that defined it are put on hold.

What the research looks at

  • Identity when the move is for someone else's career
  • Work, professional disruption and finding a new direction
  • Shifting roles within the couple and the family
  • Belonging, social networks and the sense of home
